Childrens Literature subject : Prev:483-342 | Search | Help

Coordinator: Pam Macintyre.
Prerequisite: 33.3 credit points in Language and Literature, or Children's Literature at B-level.
Contact: Individual consultations and group seminars equivalent to at least a 2-hour seminar each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of the subject the student should be able to:
- critically examine in depth one area of children's literature;
- demonstrate ways of using literature in an educational program;
- identify the theories of children's response to literature; and
- observe and analyse the reader's response to literature.
Content:
An examination of one of: picture books and major styles of illustrators; genre studies, such as fantasy, science fiction, realism; the contemporary Australian children's novel. All will include childrens' responses to the books.
Assessment:
A 6000-word essay including a comprehensive report on children's responses to the books, based on practical work with children (100 per cent).
