Prerequisite: Teachers, Inquiry & Learning 2; School Experience and Practice Teaching 2.
Contact: One 3-hour workshop/seminar each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of the subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the arts as a key learning area for children;
- demonstrate a knowledge of arts concepts and skills as they relate to the child's development;
- demonstrate a knowledge of the learning processes across the art forms of dance, drama, music and visual arts;
- demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to design, implement and evaluate arts learning programs for the primary curriculum; and
- demonstrate knowledge and application of ministerial policy and frameworks in regard to arts education and assessment.
Content:
A study of teaching strategies and developmental learning in dance, drama, music and visual arts. Students will engage in theoretical studies and a range of practical arts workshops to inform their understanding and knowledge of the role the arts play in education and to develop an arts curriculum.
Assessment:
Written assignments (1,600 words equivalent) (40 per cent); a curriculum planning project (2400 word equivalent) (60 per cent).
