Prerequisite: School Studies A, Foundation Studies in Language and Literacy, Foundation Studies in Mathematics or approved equivalents.
Corequisite: School Experience B, School Studies B33 and School Studies B55.
Contact: Up to 2-hours of literacy and plenary sessions a week, including a child study project. Sessions include seminars and workshops.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- reflect upon, analyse and devise strategies associated with the use of language in our society;
- understand the relationships between reading and writing and devise teaching strategies to demonstrate such understanding;
- gain insights into how children learn to read and write, to develop strategies and select and use appropriate reading and writing materials to enhance this learning; and
- understand and implement ministerial policy and frameworks regarding language learning, cooperative group work and assessment strategies.
Content:
An investigation and application of selected literacy theories and practices; observation of individual children's literacy development and the implementation and evaluation of planned sequences of literacy instruction with appropriate resource and use.
Assessment:
Assignments and child study project totalling not more than 3,000 words.
