Contact: A 2-day intensive workshop during a weekend or a non-teaching week, followed by practical sessions. Non-timetabled hours will be spent on individual research and completion of the assessment requirements.
Timetable: First or second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of the subject the student should be abe to:
- understand the communication process;
- understand and utilise the various vocal and physical skills necessary for effective communication in the classroom or workplace; and
- utilise various creative media as an effective means of communication in the classroom or workplace.
Content:
Topics include: communication theory, barriers to effective communication, perception, listening, non-verbal communication, relaxation techniques, breathing and vocal techniques, role norms and expectations, self image, leadership, power and communication, and group dynamics.
Assessment:
Class participation (30 per cent); an oral presentation of up to 15 minutes (35 per cent); an essay equivalent to approximately 1,500 words (35 per cent).
