Prerequisite: Teaching Method in History C and 33.3 credit points in History in Group 2, or approved equivalent.
Pre/Corequisite: (For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar each week for a total of 15 weeks.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the aims and objectives of teaching History;
- demonstrate a thorough knowledge of Social Education, Curriculum 7-10 and VCE History and the National Curriculum;
- demonstrate a knowledge of a range of teaching strategies for the History classroom;
- demonstrate an ability to plan and resource a unit of work for teaching history; and
- demonstrate a knowledge of methods of assessment evaluation in history.
Content:
A study of methods of teaching History in secondary schools. Topics include: the objectives of history teaching, children's historical thinking, inquiry learning, resources, constructing units of work, individual differences, assessment and reporting, VCE History and Australian Studies.
Assessment:
A written exercise of approximately 500 words (20 per cent); development of a unit of work suitable for use in a History classroom (50 per cent); preparation of a seminar (30 per cent).
