Credit points: 5.6. Pre- and co-requisites: (For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.
Coordinator: Bill Hampel.
Prerequisite: Teaching Method in Social Studies C and 33.3 points at Group 2 level in one of the following subject areas: Australian Studies, Economics, Geography, History, Philosophy, Politics, Sociology; or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar each week for a total of 15 weeks.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the aims and objectives of teaching Social Education;
- demonstrate a thorough knowledge of Social Education, Curriculum 7-10 and VCE Study Design;
- demonstrate a knowledge of a range of teaching strategies for Social Education;
- demonstrate an ability to plan and resource a unit of work for teaching Social Education; and
- demonstrate a knowledge of methods of assessment evaluation in Social Education.
Content:
A study of the methods of teaching Social Studies. Topics include: the objectives and dimensions of Social Education, selection of appropriate content and resources, constructing units of work, effective teaching and learning strategies, individual differences, assessment and reporting, VCE and the National Curriculum.
Assessment:
A written exercise of approximately 500 words (20 per cent); development of a unit of work suitable for use in a Social Studies classroom (50 per cent); preparation of a seminar (30 per cent).
