Prerequisite: A minimum of 75 points credit in the BEd (Secondary) or BEd (Visual Arts) course.
Contact: A total of 15 days of school experience made up of a five day block in a Primary school and a ten day block in a Secondary school. Faculty based studies consist of one 2-hour core seminar each week, plus up to 2 hours additional lectures or teaching area classes each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the diversity in backgrounds, interests, aspirations and needs of young people and the ways in which schools respond to these;
- demonstrate an appreciation of the complexities involved in the work of teachers, both in and out of the classroom;
- demonstrate insights into the differing organisational and decision-making structures in schools and how they influence the work of teachers and the experiences of students; and
- demonstrate beginning levels of competence in basic classroom skills.
Content:
A combination of direct experience (including fifteen days in schools) and study to build competence in basic classroom teaching skills and develop understanding of the backgrounds, interests and needs which young people bring to their schooling experience, the complexities involved in the work of teachers, and the structure and organisation of schools.
Assessment:
Submissions totalling 9,000 words comprising three 2000-word assignments or equivalent (22.2 per cent each); three 1000-word assignments or equivalent (11.1 per cent each); and 15 days of School Experience. To gain a pass in the subject, a student must perform satisfactorily in all areas of assessment, participate in classes and other activities.
