Prerequisite: Sociology 1A and 1B, or approved equivalent.
Contact: Three hours of lectures/seminars each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand the impact of change as an aspect of life in contemporary society;
- develop an overall perspective on the process of change, and on the major issues and problems it raises; and
- apply analytical skills and concepts to the interpretation of data about our social change and issues.
Content:
Consideration of the skills of analysis, the use and interpretation of evidence, and the selection of appropriate research methodologies. These skills will then be applied to the process of change within contemporary society, and the issues and problems that are associated with it. Attention will also be given to contemporary theories about the meaning and consequences of that process.
Assessment:
A minor assignment of 2,000 words (40 per cent); and a major assignment of 3,000 words (60 per cent).
