Prerequisite: Young People : Developmental Perspectives and Education.
Contact: 3 hours of lectures and workshops each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the ways in which students' gender, family and cultural backgrounds are seen to shape their experience in relation to education;
- demonstrate an understanding of the social and historical contexts influencing educational agendas and the organisation of schools; and
- evaluate the implications of competing claims in relation to selected current educational policies and practices.
Content:
A consideration of ways in which the social context of schooling is conceptualised and of those factors seen to be important in influencing educational agendas and modes of school organisation. The processes of reform and change are examined.A consideration of the ways in which social and cultural differences are portrayed in relation to schooling. Claims for social class, gender, race and ethnicity as specific and interrelated influences on educational experience and outcomes are examined.
An examination of recent debates around equality of opportunity in Australian education. How are the issues represented in terms of the evidence presented on diversity of outcomes and the solutions proposed for educational reform?
A detailed examination of case studies relating to the claims associated with social and cultural difference introduced in Young People : Developmental Perspectives and Education and further developed in this subject. What are the proposed educational agendas and strategies associated with them?
An examination of the ways in which the compulsory and post-compulsory years of schooling are seen and might be seen in relation to the needs of young people. Particular attention will be paid to vocational education and young people's futures as they are currently represented.
Assessment:
A major written assignment of 2,000 words (70 per cent) and a minor assignment of 1,000 words (30 per cent).
