Prerequisite: Successful completion of Library and Information Studies B11, B12, B13, C11, C12, C13, C14 and C15.
Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar each week.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand management principles, processes and techniques and their application in the development and operation of library and information agencies;
- understand organisational theory and its application to library and information agencies;
- identify and examine the management role in relation to resources - staff, facilities, materials, equipment and finance;
- identify managerial skills in planning, organising, controlling, marketing and evaluating environments, systems and services;
- examine the planning, implementation and evaluation of library and information organisations operations and services in relation to clients' needs, access and use;
- understand the importance of communication and interpersonal skills in the management process; and
- understand the positive opportunities represented by the change process.
Content:
Aspects of the management of a school resource centre including: organisation theory; finance; human resources; physical resources; management processes; and techniques and teacher-librarianship as a profession.
Assessment:
Assignments to a maximum of 7,500 words (70 per cent); a 2-hour test (30 per cent).
