Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- apply the principles of selection to school library resource collections;
- examine curriculum models existing in a range of post primary schools, particularly Frameworks and VCE;
- evolve policies which make available the widest range of suitable learning resources;
- identify sources and suppliers of book and non-book materials which support curriculum, literature and other programs within schools;
- identify networks for sharing resources between schools and other resource services;
- evaluate a range of book and non-book resources to discern issues which impinge on the selection of materials;
- apply principles and practices of deacquisition including surveying, collection mapping and weeding collections;
- develop a collection development policy; and
- examine the concept of the National Library conspectus and the implications for libraries.
Content:
This subject applies the theories and practice already studied in Collection Development 1 to issues related to a range of post-primary school library collections. General issues which impinge on the selection of resource materials will be examined to enable students to devise a collection development policy for a given library environment.
Assessment:
A minor assignment (30 per cent); a major assignment(50 per cent); two reports on field visits(10 per cent each). Total written requirement is up to 2,000 words. Students must pass each item of assessable work.
