Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of a variety of literature suitable for young adults;
- demonstrate an understanding of the various strategies available to encourage reading in young adults;
- demonstrate knowledge of recent trends in young adult literature, particularly in Australia; and
- demonstrate an ability to compile bibliographies and annotations in this area.
Content:
A study of fiction for young people, with emphasis on the literature of Australia. Ideas and strategies used to encourage reading in young adults. Recent trends in fiction for young adults and strategies for developing appropriate reader guidance.
Assessment:
A reading journal of a further 25 items beyond the Library and Information Studies A11 or a Reading Pathway of 12 to 15 items (50 per cent); a seminar paper on a selected topic (50 per cent). Total written requirement is up to 2,000 words. Students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment.
