Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 2-hour tutorial each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- define the role of the systems analyst;
- explain the steps in the systems development life cycle;
- identify the systems analyst's tools and their use;
- apply systems analysis techniques to specific cases;
- analyse the structure, operations and management of organisational information systems; and
- evaluate the impact of changing technology, human behaviour and organisational style on information system design.
Content:
A study of organisational information systems development with emphasis on the analysis process. Topics include: the system development life cycle; enterprise modelling; E-R relationship models; prototyping; dataflow analysis; the data dictionary; structured decision-analysis techniques; database definition; environmental and organisational influences on information systems design.
Assessment:
Approximately 4,000 words of field/case studies (50 per cent); a 3-hour examination (50 per cent). Students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment and submit all major assignments.
