480-215 Information Management B4: Business Computing

Credit points: 13.9

Prerequisite: Information Management A1, or approved equivalent.

Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 2-hour laboratory session each week.

Timetable: Second semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

An overview of the microcomputer systems available to business and an analysis of the hardware features and operating systems of common business computers, along with an overview of programming languages.

A study of the use of spreadsheet software (currently using Microsoft Excel), where emphasis will be placed on using the software for problem solving in business. Relevant computing concepts will be examined including the design and development of complex automated spreadsheets for scenario management using macros.

A study of Data Base Management Systems and DB software in business (currently dBase). Data Base design and management will be examined and program design and development techniques will be discussed in the context of DBMS. Relevant computing concepts will be introduced.

Assessment:

A 2-hour examination (50 per cent); two class assignments equivalent to a maximum of 3,000 words (25 per cent each). Students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment.
