Prerequisite: Teaching Method in Psychology C and Psychology 3, or approved equivalent.
Pre/Corequisite: (For each Teaching Method D) Satisfactory completion of Education Studies C, School Experience C and a minimum of 250 points credit in the course. Concurrent enrolment in Education Studies D and School Experience D12.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar each week for a total of 15 weeks.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- teach and provide support for a range of teaching strategies appropriate to the teaching of personal development components and V. C. E. Psychology units;
- apply new practitioner learnings from psychology to the State setting; and
- demonstrate an awareness of individual differences, including the educational needs of children with disabilities and special educational needs.
Content:
A study of a range of strategies, approaches and resources in the area of psychology and a critical examination of attitudes and assumptions about the teaching of psychology and associated objectives and course structures. Topics include: the teaching-learning process and the range of modes of teaching, learning activities and content; strategies for selection from these according to the objectives, students, the teacher and the nature of the subject; the planning of curriculum units; laboratory work and practical investigations; the teaching of statistics; resources; evaluation and assessment; ethics and other issues affecting the psychology teacher.
Assessment:
Four short exercises (60 per cent); one assignment of approximately 1,000 words (40 per cent). Satisfactory completion of all exercises and assignments and participation in class is required.
