Note: Special Requirement: Students should be working in, or have access to, a primary school. Students proceeding straight through to Year 4 studies from Year 3 of the BEd (Primary) course will have school placements equivalent to 2 days each week which will be arranged by the Faculty.
Credit points: 33.3
Coordinator: Phil Johnson.
Prerequisite: 20.0 points in Education Studies.
Contact: At least 48 hours in workshop/seminar/tutorial sessions, a directed reading program, school-based investigation and report preparation.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate the ability to analyse and make inferences from literature on current educational developments and issues;
- demonstrate the ability to identify and define an area of investigation relevant to a specific school or educational institution;
- demonstrate skills in information collection, collation, selection and analysis, and in reporting in useful ways from information which has been gathered and analysed; and
- demonstrate some understanding of the nature and function of research in education.
Content:
An opportunity to study aspects of the interpersonal, social, historical, political and economic context within which schooling takes place; researching within education contexts.
Assessment:
Two exercises totalling approximately 2,000 words (15 per cent each); a literature survey of up to 2,000 words on a relevant aspect of the project, a progress report of approximately 1,000 words on the project, oral reports to fellow participants, a final research project report including literature review of approximately 5,000 words or equivalent (70 per cent).
