Note: This subject is available only to students undertaking Year 4 of the BEd (Primary) course as a post-initial or in-service year of study. It provides an opportunity for teachers to meet their Year 4 School Studies requirement through attendance at weekend classes. Students should be working in, or have ready access to, a primary school. Credit will not be granted for this subject and for School Studies D, D1 or D10.

Prerequisite: Approved previous or current teaching experience in schools.
Contact: Forty-eight hours in weekend workshops/seminars/meetings and time involved in conducting two school-based projects.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- analyse and reflect on an integrated curriculum unit in which they have participated;
- demonstrate knowledge of appropriate models of teaching and learning from which a theoretical understanding of classroom practice may be developed;
- provide collaborative frameworks for the development and implementation of integrated curriculum;
- contribute to a forum for the sharing of ideas and issues related to classroom practice and theory;
- investigate an aspect of their professional practice using an appropriate methodology such as action research and provide a publishable report on that research; and
- conduct a review of the literature relating to a field being investigated.
Content:
Exploration of possibilities for integrating the primary school curriculum (following curriculum and teaching studies which tend to present the primary school curriculum as a set of discrete subject areas). A conceptual framework for curriculum integration in the primary school developed through a practical, workshop approach. Two school-based projects: one on 'Curriculum Integration' and the other on 'Teachers' Practice'.
Assessment:
A 2000 word reflective journal submitted at designated times (30 per cent); 3,000 words of planning, documentation and evaluation of an integrated curriculum unit (40 per cent); 1000 word report on a teaching improvement project and 1,000 words of an associated literature review (30 per cent).
