Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- identify successful aspects of their literacy teaching practice to cater for individual needs and abilities;
- discuss and make explicit their theories and beliefs about teaching and learning within a reading writing program; and
- evaluate and analyse systematically, current reading and writing materials in order to plan for the use of a range of genres in all curriculum areas.
Content:
How reading and writing can be more effectively evaluated; how published material can be effectively appraised in the light of the interaction between the language of the author and the knowledge of the reader; how individual differences can be catered for more effectively in the development of literacy programs.
Assessment:
Presentation and negotiation of a proposal; participation in seminars; two reflective publishable seminar papers of approximately 1,500 words each focusing on evaluation and criteria for appraising published material (50 per cent each) or a report on classroom programs (100 per cent).
