476-318 School Studies C10: Curriculum Issues

Note: This subject is a requirement for practising teachers upgrading their qualifications and complements other required School Studies subjects. Credit may not be granted for both School Studies C10 and C1.

Credit points: 10.0

Coordinator: Kath Murdoch.

Prerequisite: Approved experience as a teacher and access to a primary school.

Contact: Up to 25 hours of late afternoon and/or weekend workshop classes.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

School-based curriculum development practices in their historical and political context; critical examination of current curriculum policies, developments, issues and debates; the place of centrally provided resources, and the possibilities for collaborative curriculum work by teachers; provision for learning about the physical, social and cultural world within the primary school curriculum. Case studies of the work of Victorian teachers as staff members contributing to school policy and program development, and as individuals planning and implementing classroom programs.

Assessment:

Compilation of brief written papers on curriculum issues and arising from workshop activities (500 words) (20 per cent); studies of aspects of teachers' and schools' curriculum work (2,000 words) (60 per cent) and a curriculum planning exercise (500 words) (20 per cent).
