Prerequisite: Education B and a minimum of 150 points in the course.
Corequisite: C-level Teaching Methods and School Experience.
Contact: Two-hours of class contact time each week, taken by Education Studies staff who will lead classes made up of students with a variety of intended teaching specialisations.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
This subject is the second in the three-year Education studies sequence. It builds on the understanding developed in Education B and is designed to enable the prospective teacher to develop further the skills of planning, managing and evaluating learning, directing the focus of educational thinking to learning and teaching. Particular emphasis is thus given to the role of the teacher at work in the classroom.On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the nature of learning processes of different groups of students within different educational contexts;
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the diversity of teaching strategies and their applicability to all students in secondary classrooms;
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the current approaches to the establishment of effective school learning environments;
- demonstrate a knowledge of principles underlying approaches to student assessment;
- demonstrate the development of a shared language for talking about and analysing curriculum, teaching and learning; and
- demonstrate a continuing exploration of various platforms of curriculum, teaching and learning.
Content:
An examination of learning within different educational contexts. Demonstrations and examination of a variety of approaches to teaching and learning including experiential learning; inquiry and investigation; presentation techniques; cooperative learning strategies; dependent and independent models of learning; and negotiation. A consideration of factors that lead to effective classroom learning environments.
Assessment:
Submissions totalling 4,000 words comprising a reflective journal of 1,000 words (25 per cent); an investigative/research paper of 1,500 words (37.5 per cent); and a classroom data analysis and evaluation of 1,500 words (37.5 per cent).
