Pre/Corequisite: Completion of, or concurrent enrolment in School Studies C1 or C10, or approved equivalent studies.
Contact: A 2 1/2-hour class each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- analyse and reflect on a range of teaching strategies demonstrated to them;
- analyse models of teaching and learning appropriate to a social education program;
- develop a curriculum framework for a P-6 social education program; and
- identify, evaluate and list resources appropriate to the implementation of an inquiry based social education program.
Content:
A practical workshop approach to explore the design and implementation of a primary school social education program. Collaborative work on the development of a program for the seven years of primary education. The relationship of social education to other curriculum areas - art, drama, mathematics and language.
Assessment:
Activity in workshops; writing and sharing of a weekly reflective journal (30 per cent). Students will be required to work together to prepare and present material on program-level planning in social education (20 per cent), and will contract to prepare an analysis of appropriate resources (50 per cent). Written work of 4,000 words or equivalent.
