Pre/Corequisite: Completion of, or concurrent enrolment in, School Studies C1 or C10, or approved equivalent studies.
Contact: A 2-hour session each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- develop and carry out curriculum activities that reflect the underlying principles and philosophies of environmental education;
- demonstrate a growth in understanding about local and global environmental issues; and
- use and critically analyse the range of materials and resources available to them as teachers of Environmental Education.
Content:
A practical, workshop approach to explore the design and implementation of Primary Environmental Education Programs. Workshops will demonstrate the use of strategies and resources available to teachers in this area and explore the development of a whole school approach to Environmental Education. Students will see examples of teachers and children at work in Environmental Education and examine the place of Environmental Education in the broader curriculum context.
Assessment:
Participation in workshops and class presentations; collaborative development of a program outline for Environmental Education and the planning of supportive activities (50 per cent); the exploration of and report on an environmental issue (30 per cent); a critical analysis of resources for teaching Environmental Education (20 per cent). Written work of 2,000 words or equivalent.
