Contact: A 2-hour session each week for eight weeks.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- identify the characteristics and learning needs of students who are under-achieving in school;
- demonstrate a knowledge of behaviour and classroom management techniques and apply this knowledge to create appropriate learning environments;
- demonstrate the ability to modify existing programs and materials in order to develop appropriate programs and instructional materials to meet the needs of individual children; and
- monitor and report on progress made by students who are under-achieving.
Content:
A practically-oriented subject aimed at providing primary teachers with the skills necessary to recognise and to assist at an introductory level children who have difficulty coping with learning in the primary classroom. This subject is based on the assumption that the child can be assisted within the context of the classroom.
Assessment:
Two written exercises of approximately 1,000 words each on topics covered in class, or a paper of equivalent length on a topic negotiated with the Lecturer. Students must successfully complete each item of assessment.
