Prerequisite: Experience in schools; completion of studies providing an introduction to schools, teaching, curriculum issues and ideas in education.
Contact: A 2-hour class each week for lecture sessions and study group meetings. The approach emphasises student participation.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate a broad perspective on education and possess the skills to reflect on and debate current educational concerns;
- understand the functions of education for the individual, for different groups, and for the nation;
- understand how the education system operates and is related to other institutions in the society, eg: the economy, political structures, etc; and
- understand how concepts such as social structure and culture, continuity and change, freedom - rights and responsibilities, individualism and community, and power influence education policy and practice.
Content:
Under a theme (such as Education and Democracy) examination of methods of inquiry, theories, ideas and explanations which help to understand the functioning of school systems and schools and the behaviour and concerns of those involved. The subject draws on literature from disciplines such as curriculum studies, psychology, sociology, philosophy, history, and comparative and policy studies.
Assessment:
Individual essay and associated assignments of 4,000 words (60 per cent); group research project and associated presentations of 3,000 words (40 per cent). Satisfactory completion of all items of assessment is required.
