Contact: Normally two 2-week placements in a school designated by the Faculty.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate initial understandings about the overall functioning of a primary school and the role of the teacher;
- demonstrate initial understandings of the primary school curriculum and key learning areas;
- demonstrate basic skills in observing, communicating with and teaching individual small groups of children and the whole class; and
- demonstrate the ability to critically reflect upon their school experience and keep professional records.
Content:
Normally a 2 week block scheduled in May and a 2 week block in September at the same school in at least two different class levels. Through direct experience in schools the subject provides for students to develop their initial understandings of the broad role of the teacher, the primary school curriculum and the learning and teaching processes. It is expected that during the second 2 week block students will, with guidance from the supervising teacher, implement planned teaching tasks in the appropriate key learning areas.
Assessment:
A school experience portfolio (15 per cent) and 20 days of school experience (85 per cent).
