476-103 School Studies A: Introduction To Schools, Curriculum and Teaching

Credit points: 25.0 Staff: Jeni Wilson.

Contact: Two or three hours each week class contact throughout the year; plus twenty days school experience through placements of 2 x 1 week and 1 x 2 weeks.

Timetable: Double semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

An overview of educational theory and practice to help students to develop their initial perspectives of teaching. An introductory examination of the philosophical and sociological bases of education, closely linked with practical activities. An introduction to the primary school curriculum and a range of teaching resources.

Assessment:

Completion of scheduled days of school experience and associated tasks (40 per cent); summative paper arising from journal keeping (2,000 words) (20 per cent); two written reports arising from investigative activities each of 2,000 words (40 per cent). A student must satisfactorily complete each item of assessment.
