Contact: Two or three hours each week class contact throughout the year; plus twenty days school experience through placements of 2 x 1 week and 1 x 2 weeks.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate initial understanding about the school as a social and cultural institution within broader social and cultural contexts;
- understand the nature of teaching as a career, as a profession, as a process and as a craft;
- understand the nature of childhood and of children especially in school settings;
- understand the development of children and the range of their individual needs;
- understand the nature of learning and ways in which learning is facilitated;
- understand the nature of the curriculum and the range of content and methods in the curriculum;
- develop their own philosophical and sociological understandings about the nature and role of education, their initial perspectives of teaching;
- demonstrate the capacity to work as a self-directed learner;
- demonstrate the ability to reflect upon and evaluate experience and keep professional records;
- participate as a member of a co-operative team involved in both learning and teaching activities; and
- demonstrate basic skills in communicating with and teaching individual small groups of children.
Content:
An overview of educational theory and practice to help students to develop their initial perspectives of teaching. An introductory examination of the philosophical and sociological bases of education, closely linked with practical activities. An introduction to the primary school curriculum and a range of teaching resources.
Assessment:
Completion of scheduled days of school experience and associated tasks (40 per cent); summative paper arising from journal keeping (2,000 words) (20 per cent); two written reports arising from investigative activities each of 2,000 words (40 per cent). A student must satisfactorily complete each item of assessment.
