Prerequisite: Education Studies C, School Experience C, and two Teaching Methods in Education C (or an equivalent package); completion of at least 250 points in the course.
Corequisite: Two D-level Teaching Methods and Education Studies D.
Contact: 30 days of supervised classroom teaching usually taken as two 15 day block rounds, one in each semester.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- plan and document units designed to achieve specific learning outcomes;
- access and research appropriate content and resources for the discipline areas in which they teach;
- develop effective classroom management strategies;
- use a variety of teaching methods which respond to the learners' needs and motivate and extend their learning experience;
- use systematic monitoring, assessment and reporting strategies; and
- reflect on and evaluate their own practice and carry out the full legal and ethical requirements of the teaching profession.
Content:
A planned program of supervised school experience and practice teaching (a total of 30 days within at least two secondary schools), developing from the school experience and the studies in teaching and learning in Education C. Students assume gradually more responsibility for planning and presenting subject units and the work of particular groups of children. Programs are designed to provide the opportunity for students to participate in a range of teaching situations, including different age levels and special groupings, and to develop and employ a variety of teaching skills. At the same time, students develop further their understanding of the operation of the school as a whole.
Assessment:
30 days of supervised school experience (100 per cent).
