Prerequisite: School Studies A, or approved equivalent.
Corequisite: School Studies B33, School Studies B44 and School Studies B55.
Contact: Normally 6 weeks of school placements at schools designated by the Faculty.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand the overall functioning of primary schools and the variations between schools in different social settings;
- demonstrate detailed knowledge of language and mathematics curricula and general knowledge of other aspects of the curriculum;
- demonstrate improved personal skill development in working with children in increasingly large groups and in carrying out more complex teaching assignments;
- demonstrate a clear understanding of the capacities and responses of individual children in school settings and in their language and mathematics skill development; and
- demonstrate a clear understanding of the responsibilities and role of the individual teacher.
Content:
Normally two separate school placements scheduled in June and October/November. Through direct experience, the subject provides for development and/or understanding of: the overall functioning of primary schools capacities and responses of individual children in school settings, language and mathematics skill development; responsibilities and role of the individual teacher; language arts and mathematics curricula, other aspects of the curriculum; specific characteristics of a school's operations at the end of a school year.
Assessment:
A school experience portfolio (15 per cent); 30 days of supervised school experience (85 per cent).
