Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate personal skill development in working with children in large groups and in carrying out complex teaching tasks;
- demonstrate the ability to select, organise and effectively deliver appropriate content for the class level being taught;
- demonstrate skills in equipment operation, resources management and the production of teaching materials;
- demonstrate a clear understanding of the capacities and responses of individual children in school settings;
- demonstrate an awareness of the variety of ways to record and report assessment of learning;
- demonstrate the ability to observe, analyse and apply educational theory and government policies as addressed in the accompanying components of this course; and
- reflect critically upon their experience during the placement.
Content:
Specialist teaching experience under the guidance of a supervising teacher or teachers. They will have the opportunity to apply and develop their understanding of the theories of student learning and development with specific classes and/or learning areas. This placement will develop the students' skills in lesson preparation and classroom management. The students will be responsible for their own learning and will use the school and its staff as a resource for developing good practice.Students will spend 20 days in a designated Primary or Secondary school depending on their preferred teaching level. During the experience students will be expected to take on greater responsibility for planning and implementing classes. Students placed in a Primary school would be expected to plan and implement a full program in the final week. Students placed in a Secondary school must have teaching experience in each of their selected areas during the 20 days and will teach the equivalent of at least 35-40 classes of an hour each.
Student teachers will continue to maintain a School Experience file.
Assessment:
A School Experience portfolio (1,000 words equivalent) (15 per cent); 20 days of supervised School Experience (85 per cent).
