School Experience co-ordinators: Odette Bradica, Patricia Klemm.
Contact: 30 days in total of observation and initial practice teaching in Primary and Secondary Schools.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- observe, analyse and apply learning theory as addressed in the corequisite subjects;
- understand the role of the individual teacher with regard to children's learning;
- demonstrate initial skills in planning, arranging and implementing activities through which children will extend their knowledge;
- demonstrate the ability to cater for a range of learners in their specific teaching areas;
- apply their knowledge of literacy acquisition and competence in teaching activities; and
- reflect critically upon their experience during the placements.
Content:
This subject is designed to introduce students to both Primary and Secondary schools in the Victorian Education system and the role of teachers within these institutions. It will provide the opportunity for students to focus on the ways in which children learn, and the range of skills and knowledge required by the teacher to successfully facilitate that learning. Exposure to both Primary and Secondary settings will provide a background of the learner from P-12, and enable reflection on the ways in which the Curriculum and Standards Frameworks and Victorian Certificate of Education curricula cater for various learning styles at a wide range of age levels. Students will become aware of the roles and responsibilities of the teacher, the school and its community and their own teaching area preference.Early in semester 1 students will spend 10 days in a Primary school. This will involve 3 days on a rotation basis through a variety of grades and 7 days with an individual supervising teacher. A second block of ten days will be spent in a Secondary school. This will involve extended contact with one class or one student and exposure to a variety of teaching situations. At the end of the semester students will spend 10 days in either a Primary or a Secondary school depending on their teaching specialisation. Students will undertake either initial teaching experience at a particular class level or specialist teaching or experience in their teaching area.
Student teachers will maintain a School Experience file. This will include reflection upon the total practicum as well as a record of total preparation and evaluation of teaching assignments, reference and resource material.
Assessment:
A School Experience portfolio (1,000 words equivalent) (15 per cent); 30 days of supervised School Experience (85 per cent).
