Prerequisite: Economics B11 and Economics B22, or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar class for two semesters, except during BEd (Secondary) block periods of School Experience. Class presentations and activities may be required and, as determined at the commencement of the subject.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- extend their knowledge of economic theory and policy via a study of the History of Economic Thought; and
- acquire specialised knowledge in the History of Economic Thought, with a breadth of background suitable for intending teachers of economics or for a career in commerce.
Content:
A study of the development of economic ideas and theory in order that current theory (and practice) of economics may be seen in historical perspective. Economic theories of money, aggregate demand and supply, and the role of government will be traced, covering the mercantilist period, the classical and neo-classical schools, Marx, Keynes and contemporary economists.
Assessment:
Written submissions (totalling approximately 4,000 words) (80 per cent); class presentation (maximum of 15 minutes or 1,000 words) (20 per cent). To gain a pass in the subject students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment.
