Prerequisite: Economics B11 and Economics B22, or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour seminar class each week except during BEd (Secondary) block periods of School Experience; class presentations and activities as determined at the commencement of the subject.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- acquire further knowledge of economic theory and policy via a study of Comparative Economic Systems; and
- acquire specialised knowledge in Comparative Economics Systems, with a breadth of background suitable for intending teachers of economics or for a career in commerce.
Content:
A comparative study of economic systems in terms of their goals, methods of allocating resources, organisation and institutions. Particular emphasis on contemporary capitalism (USA and Australia), market socialism (Yugoslavia), and centrally administered socialism (USSR and China).
Assessment:
Written submissions totalling approximately 4,000 words (90 per cent); a class presentation of up to 15 minutes or 1,000 words (10 per cent). Students must perform satisfactorily in each area of assessment.
