Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour tutorial/workshop each week.

Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- appreciate the relationship between quality and equalities issues in the early childhood curriculum;
- identify and evaluate the different theoretical approaches to equalities issues within the early childhood curriculum;
- identify and evaluate the different theoretical approaches to integrated arts and sciences within the early childhood curriculum;
- appreciate the relationship between integrated approaches to equalities issues and integrated arts and sciences curriculum; and
- debate topical curriculum content issues within early childhood education.
Content:
A critical exploration of the relationship between quality and equalities issues within the early childhood curriculum, and the role of early childhood educational services in addressing these issues. Topics will include: differing theoretical approaches to ethnicity, gender, disability, class and integrated arts and science in the early childhood curriculum; inclusive approaches to equalities issues in an integrated arts and sciences curriculum and a case study of one topical early childhood education curriculum content area, for example, environmental studies, peace studies, computer technology, or language and literacy.
Assessment:
A 2500-word assignment (50 per cent) and a 2500-word equivalent project (50 per cent).
