466-363 The Early Childhood Professional 3B

Prerequisite: The Early Childhood Professional 2 or approved equivalent.

Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial each week. Students should spend time on the practical application of computer programmes to administrative tasks.

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

An introductory study of some basic organizational and administrative theories as they relate to practice within selected early childhood settings. Organizational skills as they relate to the effective implementation of an early childhood programme such as management of different categories of staff, staff appraisal and time management. Basic administrative responsibilities associated with an early childhood setting including budgeting, record keeping, enrolment processes and the use of computer applications in these areas. Administrative implications of government policy relating to funding issues, accreditation and industrial relations. The role of the committee of management in selected services and implications for the early childhood professional. Consideration of the value dimensions of the administrative role in the early childhood centre through the use of practical examples.

Assessment:

Two applied tasks or equivalent, to 3,000 words (60 per cent) and a 2000-word essay (40 per cent).
