Prerequisite: The Early Childhood Professional 2 or approved equivalent.
Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial/workshop each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- appreciate the need for and place of a Code of Ethics in the early childhood field;
- describe and discriminate between the various professional roles assumed by early childhood professionals, including educator, decision-maker, administrator and advocate;
- understand the political and some economic influences on their roles;
- demonstrate an understanding of the early childhood professional's role in working with parents as employers and as consumers;
- demonstrate skills/strategies necessary to network with relevant human services professionals and groups in the community;
- critically analyse and evaluate programme effectiveness and professional performance; and
- demonstrate an awareness of relevant occupational health and safety legislation.
Content:
A study of the early childhood professional as a leader and advocate within the service, programme or centre and in the local community; a consideration of the nature of political processes as they influence the way in which early childhood professionals undertake those roles; strategies for working with parents and other human services professionals and the roles this may involve; a study of the Code of Ethics developed for the early childhood field; skills necessary for programme evaluation and assessment of personal progress.
Assessment:
Essays and class reports totalling 3,000 words (60 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (40 per cent).
