Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour seminar/workshop each week, or equivalent.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- critically analyse the physical, psychological and social factors that put children at developmental risk;
- demonstrate knowledge of specific examples of atypical development and of the research and intervention strategies which are relevant;
- identify the indicators of atypical development and the steps involved in screening, referral, assessment and programme development; and
- show understanding of the factors which influence lifespan accommodations experienced by children with atypical development and their families.
Content:
A study of the needs and accommodations of young children experiencing atypical development, and their families, involving a critical analysis of the physical, psychological and social factors that put children and families at risk. The processes involved in identifying atypical development and setting up assessment and intervention will be outlined. A critical examination of specific developmental conditions in the context of relevant theoretical orientations, research, history and intervention strategies.
Assessment:
A 4000-word essay (80 per cent) and a 1000-word seminar presentation (20 per cent).
