Contact: Two 1-hour lectures/seminars and a 1-hour tutorial each week, or equivalent.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- show a knowledge of a number of ethical issues which relate to the upbringing of children and an awareness of the range of ethical principles to be used in decisions about children;
- show an awareness of the controversial nature of many of these ethical questions;
- demonstrate an awareness of both the relationship and the distinction between ethics and law in many issues concerning young children;
- analyse the different roles played by the state and parents in the upbringing of children;
- demonstrate an understanding of the ethical issues raised by family relationships; and
- construct a reasoned and informed ethical argument on an issue related to child-rearing.
Content:
A study of a range of ethical issues in the upbringing of children. Topics may include: children's rights, democracy in families, child abuse, sibling incest, ethical issues in the integration of children with HIV infection or Hepatitis B infection, the legal regulation of and intervention in the family, removal of Aboriginal children from families, the relation of families with professionals, the nature and limits of parental authority, parents' right to inculcate values, the effect of the new biotechnology on the family, professional codes of ethics and their effect on children's and parents' rights.
Assessment:
Two 2500-word essays or equivalent tasks (50 per cent each).
