466-358 Cds 3F: Developmental Assessment and Practice

Prerequisite: CDS2A or approved equivalent.

Contact: A 3-hour lecture/tutorial/workshop each week, or equivalent.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

A study of assessment; when to undertake it, how to undertake it, how to interpret it and what to do with the results obtained. Topics will include definitions of and comparisons between "assessment", "evaluation" and "screening". Consideration of the various types of assessment such as observations, judgments, tests and check lists. Examination of the value of appropriateness of current versus historical, formal versus informal testing, teacher based versus commercially produced tests, and norm-referenced versus criterion-referenced assessment. The relation between assessment results and the programme specifically designed for the child.

Assessment:

A 1500-word essay (30 per cent); a 1500-word report of a videotaped assessment (30 per cent) and the administration and interpretation of a selected assessment instrument (40 per cent).
