Contact: A 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour tutorial each week, or equivalent.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of approaches to the study of cultures;
- appreciate the influence of ethnocentrism in perceptions of culture;
- compare major elements of socialization, including early childhood education, in a variety of cultures; and
- describe major elements of cultural difference between and within societies.
Content:
The course will employ sociological and anthropological approaches in studying and comparing childhood and family life in various cultures. Topics will include: an area study of early childhood education and care in a country other than Australia; family, kinship, and value systems in a variety of cultures; the use of ethnographic materials in the study of childhood and culture; aspects of traditional and modern cultures; problems of cross-cultural comparison; approaches to the description of cultural difference.
Assessment:
A 3000-word essay or equivalent tasks (60 per cent) and a 2-hour examination (40 per cent).
