Contact: A 2-hour lecture/workshop and a 1-hour tutorial each week or equivalent.
Timetable: Second semester
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of selected theories of personality;
- apply this knowledge of personality theory in the interpretation and understanding of the development of children;
- display an understanding of the role of theory in personality research; and
- show ability to critically evaluate personality theories and the research underlying them.
Content:
A study of a range of personality theories which have relevance to the development of children. Topics will include: What is personality?; the nature of personality theory - its benefits and limitations in understanding development; a current psychodynamic paradigm (e. g. psychoanalytic, Jung); a socio-cultural paradigm (e. g. Adler, Erikson); a trait paradigm (e. g. Cassell, Eysenk); a recent learning paradigm (e. g. Bandura and Mischell); an existential-humanistic paradigm (e. g. Maslow, May); a critical review of the literature and research data relevant to one selected theory as paradigm.
Assessment:
A 4000-word essay (80 per cent) and two minor class exercises of 500 words each (10 per cent each).
