Prerequisite: The Early Childhood Professional 1 or approved equivalent.
Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial/workshop each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- understand the basis of some critical areas of debate surrounding children's services;
- consider analytically the changing conceptions of the functions of the professional involved in children's services;
- demonstrate knowledge relating to the health, nutrition and safety of children; and
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of the Children's Services Centres' Regulations.
Content:
The role of the early childhood professional as an educator; the Children's Services Centres' Regulations, regulations versus accreditation; guidelines, policies and practices for health, nutrition, safety and their particular application to children 0-3 years of age.
Assessment:
An essay of 2,000 words (40 per cent); applied task(s) or equivalent, 1,000 words (20 per cent); a 2-hour examination (40 per cent).
