Prerequisite: Curriculum Theory 1A, Curriculum Practice 1B or approved equivalent.
Contact: Three hours of lectures/workshops/tutorials each week or equivalent. 24 days of practicum.
Timetable: Double semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- plan, implement and evaluate a developmentally-based curriculum;
- demonstrate a sound knowledge of curriculum development with reference to children 0-3 years;
- demonstrate knowledge of mathematics and science for young children in a curriculum context; and
- identify strategies for planning learning experiences which enhance mathematics and science learning for young children.
Content:
Approaches to developmentally-based curriculum, their implementation and evaluation in programmes for children aged from 0-3 years. Strategies for planning learning experiences in mathematics and science for young children.
Assessment:
Three curriculum projects (60 per cent) totalling 3,000 words comprising mathematics (30 per cent), curriculum (20 per cent), science (10 per cent); and a practicum assessment (40 per cent). Satisfactory completion of 24 days practicum and related practical and theoretical work as specified in the Practicum Handbook. Students must pass both written and practicum assessment requirements.
