Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the origins and development of the specialist musical genre studied;
- demonstrate knowledge of stylistic features of the specialist musical genre; and
- demonstrate knowledge of selected works by specific composers from the specialist musical genre.
Content:
A theoretical and practical study of a specialist musical genre. The specialist genre (eg. jazz, chamber music) may vary from year to year, and will be selected by the lecturer teaching the subject. Students should check with the specific lecturer for information concerning the specialist genre to be studied for any given year. Topics will include: the evolutionary nature of the specialist genre; essential elements of the genre; stylistic features of different eras; instrumentation features (types of instrumental combinations, sizes of instrumental combinations); aspects of form; rehearsal and performance features of the genre.
Assessment:
Assignments equivalent to 3,500 words (70 per cent); and a class presentation (30 per cent).
