Prerequisite: Dance 1A and 1B or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour workshop and a 3-hour workshop/tutorial each week.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- develop movement skills which demonstrate knowledge and appreciation of the movement vocabulary, content and form of a range of pre-twentieth-century historical dance styles;
- demonstrate dance-making skills with emphasis on improvisational techniques and composition for young children; and
- demonstrate, theoretically and practically, an understanding of the cultural influences on dance throughout history.
Content:
A practical and theoretical study of dance, emphasising improvement and refinement of dance skills, expansion of choreographic understanding through the exploration of improvisational, choreographed and reconstructed dance forms, and a theoretical study of dance history.
Assessment:
Practical projects totalling 3,000 words (60 per cent); and an essay of 2,000 words (40 per cent).
