Prerequisite: Biology 1A and 1B or approved equivalent.
Contact: Two 2-hour lecture/laboratory classes each week and a field-day.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the mechanisms of inheritance and genetic change; and
- demonstrate a basic understanding of the processes of evolution.
Content:
A study of how populations have changed through the action of selection pressures on the mechanisms of heredity; how the history of change in populations is studied, with specific reference to Australian fauna and flora; the implications of genetic engineering.
Assessment:
Written reports of laboratory and other assignments equivalent to 5,000 words.
