Contact: Two 2-hour lecture/seminar/workshop sessions each week and excursions.
Timetable: First semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the way in which an Australian city of the Victorian Age developed;
- demonstrate knowledge of the relationships of the social, physical and economic environment of city dwellers;
- discuss the insights offered by some Australian literature depicting city life;
- demonstrate an awareness of the distinctive features of Australian suburban development; and
- demonstrate an ability to express ideas and arguments about issues related to Australian urban life.
Content:
Urban development in Australia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries emphasising the social aspects of work and leisure, thought and religion, health and housing; their effects on children and families and their representation in creative literature.
Assessment:
Two 2500-word essays or equivalent (50 per cent each).
