Prerequisite: CDS1A, 1B, 1C or approved equivalent.
Contact: Two 1-hour lectures and a 1-hour tutorial/seminar/workshop each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- appreciate the variety of contexts of socialization;
- appreciate the relationship between the cultural and structural contexts of socialization and their significance in terms of outcomes;
- understand the development of social competence and social identity;
- understand the significance of diversity in family structure and its relationship to socialization;
- understand the range of parenting styles and the impact of these on children's socialization; and
- identify and evaluate the key research relevant to topical issues in socialization.
Content:
The ecological perspective on socialization. The development of social identity and social competence. An evaluation of research relevant to selected topical issues in socialization, such as the effects of new technology and the media, the role of fathers, and the influence of child care on the socialization process.
Assessment:
An essay of 2,500 words or equivalent task (50 per cent); and a 21/2-hour open-book examination (50 per cent).
