Prerequisite: CDS1A, 1B, 1C or approved equivalent.
Contact: A 2-hour lecture and a 1-hour tutorial each week.
Timetable: Second semester.
Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- identify key areas of research concerning the relationship between language acquisition and literacy;
- describe stages and processes in the development of symbolic and metalinguistic knowledge;
- understand the major themes of research into the processes involved in learning to read and write;
- describe some major findings from cross-cultural research on language acquisition and literacy;
- understand the implications of minority linguistic status on the development of language and literacy;
- outline some of the strategies used in kindergartens and schools to foster language development and literacy; and
- evaluate the appropriateness of these strategies in the light of research on language and literacy development.
Content:
A balance of child-centered and ecological perspectives in the examination of major issues in the development of language and literacy. The course includes cross-cultural studies and studies of linguistic minorities in Australia and internationally.
Assessment:
An essay of 3,000 words or equivalent task (60 per cent); and a 2-hour examination (40 per cent).
