Objectives:
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- demonstrate, in theory and practice, a knowledge and understanding of the basic materials of music; and
- develop listening skills.
Content:
A study of the basics of music. Instruction may be individual or in groups. Topics will include: an examination of rhythm, melody, timbre, texture, dynamics, etc. This study will be undertaken in as practical a manner as possible, making full use of an extensive range of tuned and non-tuned percussion instruments and incorporating repertoires and material appropriate for use in an early childhood setting.
Assessment:
Class exercises equivalent to 1,000 words (30 per cent); assignment, group or individual, equivalent to 2,500 words (70 per cent).
