466-114 Foundation Studies

Credit points: 12.5

Coordinator: Margaret Edwards, Ruth Coulson, Rosemary Boreham.

Contact: Science: a 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour workshop each week; Mathematics: a 1-hour lecture and a 2-hour workshop each week; Literacy: a 1-hour tutorial each week.

Timetable: First semester.

Objectives:

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

Content:

Introductory studies in mathematics, science and language literacy, to provide background knowledge and skills in those areas for early childhood educators.

Assessment:

Tasks and written exercises in mathematics equivalent to not more than 1,500 words (40 per cent); tasks in science equivalent to not more than 10 pages and a 2-hour test on basic physical and biological science knowledge (40 per cent); tasks and written exercises in language literacy equivalent to not more than 750 words (20 per cent) or a 1-hour test. To pass the subject, students must satisfactorily complete each of the above requirements.
